Immersion Temperature Sensors

Immersion Thermocouples

Immersion Thermocouples are used throughout all industries. They are generally inserted into or attached directly to the media to be measured. Instrument termination is available in a quick disconnect connector which is directly mounted to the end of the sheath or an epoxy filled transition securing flexible lead wires of various insulation depending on the conditions. Each type is available in a wide variety of configurations which may be fabricated from developed part numbers on the attached PDF pages or designed by Thermo Electric to conform to any given application.

Immersion Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD)

Immersion Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD) operate under the principle that the electrical resistance of certain metals increases or decreases in a repeatable and predictable manner with a temperature change. RTD’s may have a lower temperature range than some thermocouples and a slower response time, however, they are more accurate and repeatable over long periods of time. RTD’s higher signal output make them easier to interface with computers and data loggers and reduces the effects of radio frequency interference. RTDs may be fabricated from developed part numbers from the attached PDF pages or designed by Thermo Electric to conform to any given application. RTD’s for your surface mounting requirements can be found in our surface section or where a more rugged style of connection head and well is required, refer to our industrial RTD section.

Surface Temperature Sensors

Attaching a Thermocouple or RTD to a surface for an accurate reading can be difficult. The sensor must respond quickly to avoid heat dissipation and remain attached under vibration or other stress. Thermo Electric offers a number of constructions to suit every surface application.

Industrial Temperature Sensors

Industrial Thermocouple & RTD Assemblies are used in the process and power industries where thermocouples or RTDs are installed in pipe lines or vessels. This type of assembly consists of three basic parts, the connection head, sensing element and a Thermowell or protection tube. Selecting the proper assembly involves consideration of several factors including process temperature, environment, fluid or gas pressure, pipe or vessel size and flow velocity. The more commonly used configurations are listed on the attached PDFs. They represent only a small portion of Thermo Electric’s capability to manufacture quality products conforming to your specific design applications.

Connectors and Panels

Connectors

Quick coupling plugs and jacks for thermocouple circuits were introduced first by Thermo Electric over 60 years ago. Solid thermocouple pin material and instant self-locking polarized connections gained quick acceptance in industrial and laboratory facilities throughout the nation. Connectors may be mounted to thermocouple wires or directly on the thermocouple itself to save time when checking or replacing thermocouples, or when changing instrumentation from one input to another. In the following pages of this website you will find a connector designed for your application.

  • Standard 2-Pin
  • Quick Wire 2-Pin
  • Duplex 2-Pin (4 total)
  • Ultra Temp 2-Pin

Panels

Thermo Electric jack panels provide centralized connection of thermocouples or RTD’s to associated instrumentation. Jack panels are available in a number of standard configurations as well as any special configuration your application may require. Single circuit panels are ideal for use on extruders and plastic molding machines to aid thermocouple interchange ability or in other applications where individual or specifically spaced plug connections are required. 6, 12 18 and 24 circuit panels are for centralized locations and can be stacked for large installations or future expansions. Multiple plug panels of up to 6 circuits can be simultaneously connected or disconnected. Made to order built panels can be provided in any row or circuit combination to meet environmental or space requirements.

Phenolic panels are constructed from sturdy 1/4″ thick phenolic material in both front and rear. The inserts are machined from solid bar thermocouple alloys and are virtually indestructible. These panels are also available in fiberglass reinforced TEFLON® construction, both front and rear and may be subject to temperatures of up to 500°F (260°C). All panels are easy to wire. There is no need to remove rear covers or wrap the wires around screws. Polarity markings are in full view. Panels comply to ASTM standard pin size and spacing to accept any mating connector of standard 2 pin, 3 pin or miniature type.

Velocity Calculation Services

Thermowells must be carefully selected for processes where significant velocity is present. By penetrating the process flow, the thermowell is subject to the stress and friction of the flow. This may set up a natural vibration in the well which might cause the well to shear off in the process. A “Murdock Calculation” may be performed to determine whether a particular thermowell will be acceptable for the process. Thermo Electric Engineers can perform Murdock calculations for specific applications to aid our customers in designing the proper thermowell based on the appropriate application parameters.
